5 YEARS!! That’s how long it takes to become an architect on paper.
5 years of learning how to design.
How to think.
How to deal with creative pressure and impossible deadlines.
How to develop a concept and defend it like your life depends on it.
But you know what most of us don’t leave with?
A single technical drawing set that’s good enough for execution.
Confidence to speak during site meetings.
The ability to write a basic email that sounds professional.
The Gap No One Talks About
We talk about spatial narratives, sustainability layers, and tectonic expression.
But no one teaches you how to reply to a consultant who’s asking where your HVAC shafts are.
I’m not blaming college.
But I wish someone warned us that the world outside college is not waiting to be impressed by your jury boards.
It wants clarity.
It wants timely coordination.
And it expects you to deliver. Sometimes overnight.
When I First Fumbled
I fumbled so much in the beginning.
There were days I felt dumb for asking:
“What is GFC again?”
“Where do I place the fire escape?”
“Who even approves this drawing?”
Around my sixth month in practice, I stopped waiting to figure it out and started actively learning. A few small things helped me slowly stop surviving and start actually growing:
I started checking my own drawings like someone else would.
Is it buildable? Can the contractor read this in one glance?
I wrote messy emails, then rewrote them to make them sharp.
Subject. Summary. Deadlines. Clear attachments. That’s it.
I stopped pretending I knew everything.
And started asking the smallest questions without shame.
It changed so much for me.
Because I was finally trying to learn instead of just trying to look like I knew.
You’re Not Alone in This
I know I’m not the only one who felt lost in those first few months.
That’s exactly why I’m creating a space for younger grads and students.
To give them what I wished I had.
No more fluff. No more silence.
Just honest tools, tips, and stories to help you stand stronger where college left off.
Share one thing you had to learn after college, even if it made just a small difference.
Let’s help one another. Let’s build that space together.
